What Is YouTube? The Complete History And Evolution

But before 25 years ago the idea of streaming videos over the Internet was pretty much like the stuff of science fiction
YouTube has only been around for a few years and already definitely has changed the world; the influence of YouTube is mind-boggling

In this post, we'll take a look at exactly how this platform rose to prominence and just how big it is.

If you're reading this post right now, there is an excellent chance you've heard of a website called: YouTube.

How big is YouTube

So first of all the size, every month 7 billion hours of video is being watched, it will take you four straight days of watching just to view the amount of video uploaded every 60 seconds but, surprisingly 80 percent of all YouTube views come outside of the USA-United States of America.

In terms of size on the world of web, YouTube currently is the third most visited site on the Internet and the second largest search engine on the Internet.

So this will quickly give you a glimpse into how big YouTube actually is right now, but What is history?  How did all this happen? Where did all this come from?

Well let me tell you an interesting little story, it all began our genius Elon Musk, yeah the same guy who is planning to send people to Mars and the same guy who created the all-electric car company Tesla and also co-founded a website called PayPal.

And it happened that three employees of PayPal would go on to change the world their names are Chad Hurley, Jawed Karim, and  Steve Chen after completing their days at PayPal they developed a video dating website called Tune In hook-up.
youtube, youtube first video, me at the zoo, history of youtube

Tune In hook-up was a site where people could just upload videos of themselves to find dates and as you could guess it didn't really work at all as most people were really not interested in the idea.

But as it often happens with these things would strike one day, Jawed happened to notice how hard it was back then to find a video of Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction on the Internet, this sparked an idea and the lack of James wardrobe malfunction was realized as a market need, and who thought at that time the solution to this need would change the whole world, they really just needed the right formula and sit was found within their existing Tune in hook-up which they later named it as YouTube , YouTube was founded on 14th February 2005 in a small room above a pizza shop in California
The first video was uploaded by Jawed Karim on the 23rd of April 2005, and it was titled “Me at the Zoo,” and it wasn't very long before YouTube had its very first 1 million hit video and it happened in September 2005, and it was actually a Nike app, The ad featured the Ronaldinho who happens to be a very famous Brazilian player, and it made Nike one of the very first companies to embrace YouTube’s promotional potential by November 2005.

On June of 2006 NBC The site had already received 3.5 million dollars in finisher capital, and YouTube struck a deal, and it helped the old traditional media company get into the digital age, after this it wasn't very long before the site caught the attention of  popular Google and in October 2006 the site was acquired for a whopping 1.65 billion dollars along with the co-founders of the website.

At the time the company only had 65 employees, things just kept going from strength to strength for YouTube, and that year YouTube was one of the fastest growing sites on the entire Internet there's obviously something special here, this was really just the beginning the site

In 2007 the YouTube Partner Program came into the picture, this changed the lives of many people

For the very first time in the world history, YouTube made it possible for everyday people to turn their hobbies into a business, and about a year later, the most successful users were earning six-figure incomes from YouTube.

Out of 16, over seven presidential candidates announced their campaigns through YouTube in the very same year and YouTube and CNN hosted their first presidential debate featuring citizens submitted video questions in July, this was also the first time into bait history where user-generated video drove the discussion for some reason

Continuing with the story in the year 2007 (August) Google finally decided it was time to start making money and rolled out the very first advertisements, after this it wasn't very long before YouTube indeed became mainstream, Congress and the Vatican launched their YouTube channels in 2009, and by 2011 several features such as YouTube’s live streaming allowed real-time footage of anything from the Olympics to rural wedding to live concerts on news coverage in the same year

It became obvious that YouTube is capable of doing even bigger things.

It could influence world history during the 2011 Arab Spring YouTube played an important role in disseminating messages of freedom and democracy it demonstrated the major cultural movements

From 2012 onwards YouTube has never really looked back over the years every few months new features have been added to the dismay or joy of many but regardless saw the exponential growth of the website

One of the reasons it did very well this fast was because it allowed anyone to watch as many videos as they wanted for free and upload any number of videos.

All these years as YouTube has grown a lot, all of the features they have added have also been free. And out of the so many changes they have made to YouTube over the years - some good and some not so good – it is undeniable that there's one thing at the forefront of everybody's YouTube experience: the interactions.

Whatever you do besides watching a video are interactions, namely Rating videos, leaving the comments, subscribing to channel, creating playlists - all these things you do makes YouTube changes itself to fit you.

I guess that's why they call it to YouTube.
what is youtube, history

YouTube is a very much a lean-forward experience where you’re not just watching a video; you’re reading the comments and clicking on the annotations, looking at the related videos and seeing what other people have to say and engaging in a type of connection that was never possible before the Internet.

So that's all well and good but, what are other exciting things are there about YouTube just how big is it now well it's bigger than TV

Even though YouTube is a new form of media, people start to compare it with the television and film and radio as if YouTube is going to replace television somehow. Oh, YouTube is the new T.V.!

I feel there's no comparison between new media and traditional media.
But, according to Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google, he feels that YouTube is already replacing TV watching as a whole, and further he says that the "future of YouTube is now."

This was in reference to YouTube having passed 1 billion unique visitors every month, but he says it's not finished until he manages to get 6 billion or 7 billion unique users a month but, that was two years ago, and now everyone has already started to realize just how big YouTube is

Even the TV advertisers are now starting to turn away from TV towards YouTube, and one of those ways is through Google's preferred program where exclusive advertisers choose to advertise on premium channels of YouTube.

Not only this but some genuine celebrities have actually made their start from YouTube apologetically one that comes to mind is Justin Bieber, but apart from that we have shows like workaholics which were to mirroring concept shows are enjoying a lot of commercial success, but that's not all of it, some quite interesting phenomena is happening just by the sheer amount of video that's on there.

There are more videos being added all the time, but already it works as an actual TV of the decade
Well, guess what? For the past hundreds of years, the theatre was the primary form of entertainment ever produced.
Thomas Edison completed his first phonograph In August of 1877, the first time in human history a new invention allowed recording of audio.

But what looks like such an incredible progression of the human invention was not met as openly as you might or might not expect.

You see, up until this point ever in time, every musician that ever performed ever had to do was just by going live in front of an audience. There was nothing such as recording audio.

So to have a great musician be able to be recorded and then play that back without the musician being needed felt like science fiction or piracy.

youtube, what is youtube

And accept the fact or not, a lot of people used to think that, "This is the end of live music." And again with the invention of the motion picture, people could film something and then play that something back, in the meantime people again started to think, theatre is dead! And then when the television came out, where people could take the theatrical experience and put it in their homes.

Again they thought movies are dead! Time has been proving us time to time that radio, theatre, television, films, and movies have not gone anywhere yet.

So, even in a world where YouTube might soon become your or 1's a primary form of media, I don't think it's fair to say that older forms of media are dead.

YouTube is one of our favorite kinds of media. You see because even though YouTube is a form of media, it's also something more significant than that YouTube is a form of communication.

Now don't get me wrong, films and television too are very forms of communication. However, for the past several years, most of the produced media were being done so in a top-down structure.

It means that the studios and the networks produced the content, and then you chose what content you wanted to consume.

If you didn't like one show, maybe you'll like another show. And if you don't like this particular movie; maybe you'll like another movie.

But either way, you didn't have much to say in the creation of the content.

People just sat back, consumed, and handed over our money.

But now things are different. It is all bottom up and not top down anymore.

We are currently living in a time where anyone who has access to a camera and a stable internet connection can put something online and have it seen by the people of the entire world.

For the first time ever in human history, the playing field became equal. And what are people doing with this opportunity? People are creating, communicating, investing their time in entertainment, in filmmaking, in pets, in gaming, in vlogging and teaching, but most importantly, people are investing their time in each other.

I may be alone on this one, but I personally feel this is one of the most amazing and best things I have ever seen on the Internet

It's really like unfiltered history. YouTube isn't a website that I daily visit; it's a community where I live.

So just finishing off, there's so much I can go on saying about YouTube, but it's clear that the community is very vibrant as there are new forms of infotainment channels or even channels for straight learning, there's everything from hilarious prank videos to incredible special effects or just straight-up comedy

YouTube definitely has changed the world personally, politically, for the lives of many and collectively in the way we communicate with each other and tend to consume media throughout the society

It's all exciting and only time will tell where this platform will go in another ten years. But it is a fact that video on demand [VOD] has never been so good and diverse.

So when you look back at the big picture, you will be really amazed to see that all of it was started by three good friends who just realized that there was no good existing way to view or share an embarrassing video of Jenna.

Thank you. I will see you guys soon with a fantastic article
